MRL #044- The 4 Types of Producer Luck (And How to Create It)
Have you ever known someone who seemed to have all the luck?
Like they were born with a rabbit’s foot up their ass?
Me too.
Matter of fact, I’ve run into a couple of them in the insurance world.
Seems like every stone they look under there’s a $50K revenue account begging to hire them.
Maybe you can relate.
So, why all this talk of luck?
Well, last week while I was jet-setting off to a golf weekend with the fellas, I re-listened to one of my favorite podcast episodes by Naval Ravikant titled “How To Get Rich”.
(Ignore the title its not what you think)…
In it he shares the idea (first introduced by legendary VC Marc Andreesen) that luck is more than just a roll of the dice…
It’s actually something we can manufacture.
As I re-listened I began making connections to my journey as a Producer…
And I gotta tell you he’s spot on.
So, in this letter I’m going to share with you Andreesen’s “4 Types Of Luck” and how to create more of it, so, we can land more clients, write more business, and make more money.
Sound good?
Ok, lets begin.
Luck I: Dumb
Dumb luck is like being struck by lightning on a clear day.
It's those random events that have absolutely no connection to our choices or actions.
Think of winning the lottery.
You can't plan for it, and you certainly can't control it.
It's the wild card that life throws your way.
For a Producer, it’s that $25K revenue call-in that you did nothing to earn.
Luck II: Motion
Ever heard the saying, “even a blind hog finds an acorn every now and then.”
That's motion luck in a nutshell.
It's all about action, persistence, and hustle.
Motion luck is the kind you earn.
For a Producer, this is making 40 calls a day, day in and day out.
Luck III: Preparation
Preparation luck is the kind of luck that favors the prepared.
It's about being in the right place at the right time and having the awareness to see the opportunity staring you in the face.
It's influenced by your actions, and being ready to capitalize on favorable situations.
You create this luck through your choices.
For a Producer, this is knowing your industry inside and out and seeing trends of where the market is heading before others do—like Parametrics or Cyber.
Luck IV: Unique
Unique luck is the most elusive and the hardest won.
It’s about becoming a person good luck finds precisely because of “who” you are and the “unique” value you bring to the marketplace.
It’s about building a body of work over a career that makes you a world renowned expert in your field, and the opportunities that seek you out precisely for that expertise.
A good example is Warren Buffett. He benefits from having incredible business opportunities seek him out because of who he is.
For a Producer, this is being an expert in a very particular niche. Maybe it’s a specific coverage or micro-niche you’re known for.
Deals seek you out, not the other way around.
So, knowing “The 4 Types of Luck”…
How Do You Create More Of It As A Producer?
#1. Go Make A Ruckus
Just by taking action and being in the arena, you increase your likelihood of encountering luck.
#2. Keep Your Eyes Peeled
Look for emerging trends and new opportunities in the industry. Luck lives in the new spaces undiscovered.
#3. Go Deep
Depth will give you insights, knowledge, and pattern-matching skills unique to you. Luck always seems to find those who are “experts” or “the only” in their field.
Ok, That’s Enough Out Of Me…
Let’s wrap this thing up.
In closing, by recognizing the four kinds of luck, you can take active steps to improve your chances.
Now, you have two options.
First, you can stand around being jealous of other people’s good fortune…
Or secondly, you can get busy making your own.
I’m sure you’ll make the right choice.
See you next Sunday.
Kick ass take names,
