MRL #058- The Ozempic of ProducerLand

Looks like I struck a nerve when I posted the following on LinkedIn yesterday:

========

You hear about some guy writing $400k in 1 year. Cool.

What I want to know is HOW they did it.

Did they do that completely from scratch?

We’re they brought in on some of that revenue?

Do they have an exclusive appointment or product?

Is it a referral from a client they were previously [gifted from their agency]?

There’s always a story behind the story.

Stop comparing yourself to other’s successes.

99% of the time you’re not getting the full picture.

========

I received more than a few DM’s from Producers who weren’t happy.

Turns out, after further clarification, most didn’t understand what I meant by the post.

So, allow me clarify it’s meaning.

I was simply making the point that…

Comparing Your Success (Or Lack Thereof) To Other People’s Success Is A Bad Idea

For example…

In the last 7 days I’ve spoken to (or heard of) the following:

  • A Producer who did $100k last month via Twitter

  • A Producer who did $400k last year via LinkedIn

  • A Producer who did $700k in his first 2 years.

Now, is any of this true?

Maybe. I don’t know.

I hope it is, honestly.

But, from my experience the majority of the time there’s always more to the story.

  • Producers get handed books

  • Producers get brought in on deals

  • Producers have exclusive products and programs

  • Producers have insane deals fall in their lap

I’ve experienced it first hand too many times.

I would see somebody throwing up huge numbers, and start comparing my numbers to their’s…

Only to find out 3 years later, once I got a better peek behind the curtain, it didn’t happen exactly how they described it.

Another example…

Have You Noticed That Everybody And Their Brother Is Skinnier These Days?

I swear, if I don’t see someone for 6 months and then suddenly run into them at the grocery store, they’ve dropped half their bodyweight.

Seems like everybody’s losing weight.

Everybody.

Now, even though almost no one’s advertising it on their shirt…

I’m smart enough to realize that everybody hasn’t magically conquered their food addiction and summoned every last drop of their willpower in the last 12 months…

It’s probably just Ozempic.

They went to their Doc, got a prescription, and starting getting the shot.

It’s that simple.

Did some of these people lose weight the old fashioned way?

Sure.

But, not most of them.

And that’s okay.

I’m not hating on anybody who has.

Hell, I’ve taken the shot myself.

The point I’m making is that comparing your weight loss results from diet and exercise to other people taking a magic pill would be silly, wouldn’t it?

Now, apply that to what I was saying about revenue numbers.

“But Max, What If They Are Telling The Truth?”

Great!

I hope they are.

That means there’s better ways to play this Producer game and win bigger!

All I’m advocating for is a touch of healthy skepticism, and a heaping dose of perspective.

Because, as Granny Revenue used to say…

“If something seems too good to be true, it probably is.”

So…

Run Your Own Race

And stop comparing yourself to other people.

Because at best… they’re only showing you their highlight reel (not their norm).

Or, more often the case… a partial truth.

This job is hard enough, friend.

No need to put more pressure on yourself than their already is.

Deal?

Deal.

Ok, that’s enough for this newsletter.

Got to get back to the football game.

The season’s almost over and fat boy’s gotta soak up as much of it as he can.

Hope you have a great week.

Kick ass take names,

Maximus F. Revenue IV

P.S. If you wanna check out The Producer Playbook you can do that here.
