MRL #057- Workout This 1 Tiny Muscle To Crush Your Goals In 2024 (It's Not What You Think)

I love powerlifting.

Powerlifting is a strength sport that consists of maximal weight on three lifts: squat, bench press, and deadlift.

I do not compete. And honestly, for my size, I’m not that strong.

But what I love is watching my lifts gradually get stronger and stronger over time.

By using “progressive overload”—gradually increasing weight and volume over time—my body is challenged in new ways and forced to adapt.

Thus, getting a little stronger every workout.

2.5 more pounds here… 5 more pounds there…

Over the course of a year all those tiny gains add up.

For example…

I started last year with a max bench press of 275. Now, 12 months later, I’m at 325.

I’m not Hercules, but if I keep at it, I might be one day.

It’s just a matter of time and effort.

Now, this is a newsletter about becoming a better Producer, not about lifting more weight.

And sadly, larger pecs and quads won’t make you or me a better Producer.

But…

What If I Told You There Was A “Muscle” That Could Make You A Better Producer?

Would you believe me?

You should.

I mean, have I ever steered you wrong before?

Fine… don’t take my word for it.

Listen to Stanford Neuroscientist and health guru Andrew Huberman explain it to David Goggins here.

…

Yes, actually stop and watch the clip then come back to this email.

Seriously. Go listen.

I’ll wait here.

…

…

…

…

…

Finished?

Ok, let’s continue.

As Huberman explains in the video there’s a brain structure called the anterior midcingulate cortex (AMC).

The AMC or as I like to call it the DIFA (do it fucking anyways) is responsible for human willpower.

Recent studies show when people do something they don’t want to do there AMC actually gets bigger.

Like, it actually grows in size!

And not only does it grow in size, but it actually grows stronger.

To illustrate his point Huberman uses the analogy of an ice bath…

If you hate getting in an ice bath, but do it anyways, your AMC will grow in size.

Over time as your AMC continues to grow in size and strength it actually becomes easier to get in the ice bath in the future.

Mind blown.

I’ve always heard “doing hard things” instills tenacity and willpower, but this new study actually unlocks the science behind why!

Now…

Let’s Take This New Science And Apply It To Us As Producers

After all, I did promise this would help you crush your 2024 goals.

I don’t know about you, but the main bottleneck in my book growth is me.

More specifically, me not doing the things I don’t feel like doing.

For me, that usually entails prospecting.

Which is funny because I know that making more calls will result in more new business.

But I procrastinate. I avoid it. I get busy with other things I want to do (like Max Revenue).

Maybe you can relate?

Do you find the work you need to be doing is the work you avoid?

Do you avoid prospecting because you don’t feel like it?

Do you avoid follow ups because you don’t feel like it?

Would you write a shit-ton more business if you did it anyways?

I bet the answer is “yes”.

As Huberman says…

The Solution Is “To Do More Of The Work You Don’t Want To Do!”

Or as I say…

“Do it fucking anyways”.

Because the more you do the shit you don’t feel like doing (whatever that is for you)…

The easier it is the next time you have to do it.

A mental victory here… a mental victory there…

Just like fat boy and his powerlifting, those small wins begin to add up.

Before you know it, those wins start to show up on the scoreboard.

Keep winning and you’ll crush your 2024 goals.

Ok, that’s enough out of me.

Now on to my blatant sales pitch.

Unfortunately, we don’t have anything more on your anterior midcingulate cortex in our Producer Playbook.
